Liquid to Matt Lips: MUA Lux Velvet Lip Lacquer review

I may have mentioned before that I’m a bit obsessed with the idea of liquid to matte/lip creme formulas. So I was excited to see an albeit limited selection of the MUA Luxe Velvet Lip Lacquer range in my local Superdrug.

MUA LUXE lip lacquers review- Geen Geenie

I’ve not tried any Make Up Academy products before but at £3 each I thought these were worth a try. Neither nudes nor purple were available in store so the shades I tried were these: Atomic (bright coral)Funk (hot pink) and Reckless (dark pink toned red).  The outer black cardboard box these come in is not pictured, I think they look much nicer without.

MUA LUXE LIP LACQUER HONEST REVIEWLime Crime’s woeful reputation means despite the ‘velvetines’ hype I’m giving them a miss, so I can’t compare how these perform directly. However alternatives have been thin on the ground in my neck of the woods. I bought Sleek Make-up’s Matte me in ‘Birthday Suit’ and was impressed by this ‘suits all’ nude shade. However  Matte Me ‘Rioja-Red’ was a nightmare to apply, required much blotting, smeared  easily and wore off messily. But it still wasn’t as disappointing as Bourjois’ Rouge Edition Velvets (which I reviewed here!)MUA Vet Lip Lacquer swatches wet- atomic-funk-recklessOf the heavily pigmented liquid to matte shades I’ve found, these MUA Velvet Lip Lacquers  are the easiest to work with. Their formula is thicker than Sleek’s, making it easier to apply and stay inside the lip line. Blotting is still a good idea but I found they dried pretty quickly and lasted fairly well applied to clean dry lips. Obviously the inside edge will wear first with  eating and drinking, and I recommend a swipe of your favourite lip balm to blend in the missing colour if you’re out and about and can’t manage a careful reapplication.lippy in the librarySo to sum up here’s a picture of me wearing MUA Velvet Lip Lacquer in Reckless ‘in real life’. (And if you really want you can click here if you’d like to see close up.) It looks quite pink in certain light, and Funk is very similar but not as dark. The hardest shade to wear of these three is Atomic. It doesn’t go on as evenly as the other two, and the very bright coral is at odds with my warm skin tone. It probably would have worked better with my blonde hair, but oh look! I’ve gone dark for autumn!

I hope you’ve enjoyed the review. Let me know if you’ve tried these products and what you thought of them. Or if you know of any other bargain brand of liquid to matte lippy I should try feel free to suggest them in the comments.
